The Founder of BELA
Dr. Mohiuddin Farooque was born on 25 June 1954 in Gopalganj, Faridpur. He obtained a Masters in Law degree from the University of Dhaka and was awarded the University Prize Man for the year 1979. He obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Manchester on International River Law in 1988.
Dr. Farooque established BELA in 1992 and devoted his career to the cause of environment. He unveiled a new field for activism through environmental law. He fought for establishing the rights of the downtrodden people and within a very short period set an exceptional trend of performing public duty in protecting environment and the interests of the common people.
A bright academician and researcher, Dr. Farooque wrote extensively on environment and environmental law. His publications include 69 articles and 7 books. A teenage freedom fighter, Dr. Farooque breathed his last on 2 December 1997 at the National University Hospital in Singapore.
In his absence, his colleagues at BELA are sincerely and ably pursuing his mission of promoting environmental justice.
